South Africa Expands Smart ID Card Services to 541 Locations Nationwide 

Getting a Smart ID Card is becoming much easier for South Africans. On 22 July 2026, the Department of Home Affairs announced a major expansion of Smart ID Card services, increasing access to 541 locations nationwide. The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to improve access to identity services and reduce the challenges many citizens face when applying for official documents. 

Main Update

This move is part of the Home Affairs @home reform programme, and the goal is simple: put identity services within closer reach of everyday people. The South African Government  pointed out that for years, applying for or renewing a Smart ID Card meant long queues, bus fares people could barely afford, and sometimes a full day off work just to get one form processed. The rollout aims to solve these challenges by increasing the number of service locations. It also introduces a mobile Home Affairs unit that brings services directly to communities.

541 locations is a big jump from where things stood before, and it gives people a lot more offers greater access  when it comes to choosing where to go. Absa joining the partnership means customers can now sort out Home Affairs matters through select bank branches, no need to hunt down a dedicated office. The mobile unit will travel to remote and underserved communities, making Smart ID services more accessible for residents.

For most people, this comes down to simple things: less travel, shorter waits, and not having to lose a day’s pay just to renew an ID.
